The Blue Crab is a community gathering place, a comfortable lounge-type place that can be many things. We've redesigned The Blue Crab to be more than just a coffee shop. It's a blank slate for any type of gathering, be it meeting over morning coffee or lunch, any type of performance on our stage, or a private event making use of our stage or projector and movie screen. We've opened the doors to everyone in the community. We're a family business and we hope everyone from locals to tourists feels welcome here.
By day, The Blue Crab features freshly in-house baked goods, plus breakfast and lunch that include local ingredients from the Delmarva Peninsula. After a full kitchen renovation, we hired local chefs to elevate the traditional coffee shop baked goods, breakfast and lunch fare. On weekend evenings, the coffee shop features local musicians and movie screenings, accompanied by wine, beer, and small plates.
Brian Herman, a music producer from New York City, and his wife Helen Herman, an architect, extensively renovated the eatery and also kept the building’s history alive. It was first constructed in 1883 by the Independent Order of Oddfellows who named it The Freedom's Friend Lodge No. 1024. The Oddfellows were comprised of black men, mostly veterans who had served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
