St. Michaels: A Storied Chesapeake Treasure

The historic town of St. Michaels, Maryland traces its roots to the mid-1600s, when it emerged as a trading post for tobacco farmers and trappers on the Eastern Shore. The founding of the Christ Episcopal Church of St. Michael Archangel parish in 1672 established both the spiritual heart of the community and the name that still defines the town today.

By 1778, British land agent James Braddock had laid out 58 town lots and created St. Mary’s Square, which remains the historic center of St. Michaels. His donation of land for a Methodist church led to the construction of the Sardis Chapel, reflecting the early Methodist influence that shaped the town.

St. Michaels soon became a shipbuilding powerhouse. By the War of 1812, as many as six shipyards produced the swift schooners later known as Baltimore Clippers—vessels prized for their speed, agility, and ability to outrun naval ships and pirates. Some became privateers operating under government-issued letters of marque, combining patriotism and profit. In 1812, shipbuilder Thomas L. Haddaway launched the schooner Lottery, one such vessel.
